Tandem surfing started in1920's when Waikiki Beach Boys took the tourist girls out for rides on their surfboards. Before long they were doing shoulder sits and stands to show off. Surfing legends Pete Peterson and Lorien Harrison went to Hawaii in 1931 where they first saw tandem surfing. They came back to California the next year and started tandeming at Malibu and Corona Del Mar. The early lifts were the same as the easiest shown on Picture Lift Sheet. By 1963 teams were up to the difficulty of the Grass Shack. By 1970, every lift on the sheet had been done on a surfboard. Since 1970 Steve and Barrie Boehne have nurtured the sport of tandem surfing by sharing and teaching the tandem lifts they have learned or invented over the years.
