Ku Ku Hoe means "stand up - paddle" in Hawaiian. We have adapted and trade marked this name for our Stand Up Paddle boards. It seems appropriate since the first guy who I ever saw do it was Leroy Achoy, a Waikiki Beach Boy and tandem surfer. In the 70's before cheap water cameras, Leroy would stand on his tandem board and paddle in the surf at Waikiki taking pictures to sell to the tourists. He hung his camera around his neck where it remained dry. Decades later, Laird Hamilton has made stand up paddling possibly the fastest growing segment of the sport of kings.
Richard Waileale Rides an 11' Nose Rider Model at Waikiki. He uses the paddle as an extension of his body where he can reach the water to speed up his turns. I make primarily four styles of Ku Ku Hoe boards; the standard, stable 12' boards that are easy to learn to paddle and catch waves on. These boards are individually hand shaped to match the paddlers weight and agility. A wider board is more stable, but paddles slower, so you don't want to get bigger than you need.

Infinity boards ride soft and loose, they do smooth, flowing zig-zag turns.
As SUP surfing has grown, we have added seven models to our line up to accomodate the styles and intended use of our riders: The standard Kuku Hoe shape: .
This is the model to get when you are first starting. It has a flowing outline and rocker that offers a stable and good performing ride. Consult the size chart on the "What size to get?" page. This board is 12' long and 29" wide. It is red opaque on the bottom with a black pin line and a flower inlay on the nose. It has our rubber traction pad in blue. You don't need wax! This 12' length is great for distance paddling and ocassional surfing. I can shape this model up to 33" wide for really big guys. most people order it from 10' to 11' for surfing. The Competitor Model
The competitor model has been developed to perform in the "slash and shread" style predominant in SUP contests. It has a very special rocker with a flat speed section in the center. The tail rocker and V-bottom are focused at the "sweet spot" directly under your feet as you turn. The V-bottom behind the fins is flattened out to make the turns smoother and add projection. There is a pronounced kick in the nose to accomodate big off-the-lips and reentries. This is a three fin model from 9' to 10'6" long. Consult the size chart (expert paddler) on the "what size to get?" page. The Nose Rider Model
This is a Ku Ku Hoe version of our famous Rad Noserider longboard. These boards are normally 28" wide, but I shape them up to 33" wide for big guys, so they are very stable. The wide concave nose makes them easier to nose ride than a regular long board. Surfing on this model is so much fun because I use the same "sweet spot" rocker that I use on the Rad Noserider, they can zig-zag turn and you can walk all over them like a platform. I found that if I wear a normal leather belt, I can velcro my leash to it behind my back and walk forward and back without getting the leash tangled in my feet. Cross-foot walking is easy and fun if you're not caught up in a leash. This board, with a nose riding rocker is desgned for waves 6' and under. Available from 9' to 11' long. There is now an 11' Surftech Nose Rider model available. It is 28" wide and 4 5/8" thick. This board is a great first board and works well for guys up to about 200 lbs. The Quad Fin model.
The Quad Fin model is a short, stubby shape made to ride like a regular surfboard. With a 22" wide nose, 28" width and 18" wide tail this board is incredably easy to paddle in the shorter lenghts between 9' and 10'6". A young, aggressive surfer could get this model as his first board. It has the same high performance bottom rocker and V-bottom as the Competitor, but has a wider tail with a quad fin set up that makes it rip in small waves. This board is the "anti-fish" because it has very curvey hips that pull the outline into a narrow diamond tail. This allows forward stance rail turns rather than rear stance tails turns that a fish requires. Plus, you don't have those silly tail tips to break off. The big wave Carver

This model has a pulled in nose with good kick for late drops and a narrow tail for carving turns. The rocker is relatively straight in the center for speed and wave catching ability. The tail rocker is more blended than the other models for speed. The V-bottom is combined with a double concave to give you precise, powerful turns. There is now a 10' Surftech Carving model available. This board is designed for bigger guys. While most 10' SUP boards are 4 1/4" thick, this Surftech model is 4.75" thick. This extra thickness allowes a 200+ pound guy who is an experienced paddler to enjoy a shorter board with adaquate floatati0n.
Below, Dan Boehne rides a 10' long x 28" wide x 4.75" thick carving model. It has a slightly pulled in nose with a little extra kick and a double concave tail with 3.5" side-bites. Like many guys getting their second Kuku Hoe boards, Dan has found that he can do most of his shortboard manouvers on this highly responsive board.

The Ocean Down Winder model
This board is 14' long, 27" wide and 5" thick. It has a thick-deep V bow which flowes back to a semi rounded bottom in the tail. The Down Winder model is a 14' touring or racing board. These boards are designed along with input from the paddler to optimized his intended use. The narrow "V" bow splits the chop when paddling up wind and the wide squaire tail planes easily and catches swells when going down wind. This shape can be done narrower and still maintain stability because the width is carried back to the tail. It is a great open ocean racer or inland water way explorer. The Ocean Racer
This board is 14' long, 27" wide and is fast in any direction The Lake Racer model
This lake racer is 12' long, 27" wide and 5" thick.
This lake racer is 12' long and 27" wide with a fuller nose and a pin tail. The Lake racer is a wounderful board to paddle on flat water. It has a deep V bow that splits the chop like a destroyer. The bow also knifes into the water to make a straight "lay-line" which means that the board will hold a straight course exceptionally well when you paddle on one side. (You don't need to continually change sides when you paddle in order to go in a straight line). This model is also available 14' long. Many of the other stand up board shapers have not had the 30 years of experience I have had riding and shaping 12' tandem boards, so they just shape them like giant surfboards. I have learned that these boards must have a very special rocker and V-bottom in order to make them loose and turn easily. In addition, many shapers think that the tail must be really wide for stability and really thin like a regular longboard, but they've got it wrong. I get the stability from the width in the center and I use the curved "hips" to pull in the tail and make the board carve and turn better. For those of you who have learned to "jibe" a sail board, you will understand the concept of a quick turn on a Ku Ku Hoe board. A quick turn is used when you are paddling out and you want to turn quickly to catch an on coming wave. You step to the back, sink the tail and pivot the whole board around "on a dime" This is much easier to do with a narrow, but thick tail. The thick tail prevents the board from sinking too much and helps it pop back to the surface to accelerate into the wave. Below are some samples of lamination color options:
This is a yellow and red marble abstract. There are many great combinations: (white-blue-green), (lt. blue-dk. blue), (lt. green-dk. green), (Lt. gray-blue), etc.
This is a two color (top and bottom) combination.
This is a blue and white camoflauge.
This is a brown, beige and green camoflauge. Surftech models
This Board is the 12' long x 31" wide x 4 3/8" thick Laird model made by Surftech. Since we are a Surftech dealer it is only natural that we should offer this board in our shop. Ron House did a fine job shaping this board. If you want a board that is absolutely stable, this is it. Anyone will be able to learn on this board easily. It is obviously not what Laird rides. It is ment as an easy all around board. It has a 1/8" concave, full length on the bottom which will make it very fast in the surf, but perhaps a little slow to turn. The finish is perfect and the glass strength will make this board last for ever $1570 DECK PADS: We install a rubber deck pad on many of the Ku Ku Hoe boards to avoid using wax. This is especially good in tropical climates. The rubber deck pad does not tear your skin off if you fall on it like sand or salt decks can do. With a new board, the deck pad costs $100 installed and $175 installed with clear Ultra Deck all the way up to the nose. Deck pads are also sold seperately. see: How To Order PADDLES: find more information about our surf paddles
